It started with a dream, as I brewed a cup of coffee 5 AM in the morning while studying for a complicated exam overnight and going through an existential crisis. We’ve all experienced the predicament of fiercely attempting to focus on conquering our academic milestones as thoughts of the future and its endless possibilities intrude our alarming mind. Is this even worth it? I thought to myself. Being sleep-deprived and ever-
Entrepreneurial figures and industrial mavericks from Steve Jobs to Elon Musk entered my mind as I began to question whether the decision to become an accountant, as capable as I was, was bold enough. Or could I be bolder?
I know better. I have the entrepreneurial passion waiting to be utilized. I’ll start my own thing eventually. I don’t need these grades for a job, I am a badass on my own. Businesses generate more economic activity and I could contribute to that while crunching coffee beans insteads of just numbers. And who doesn’t love the smell of freshly ground coffee? Karachi needed to know what that smelled like.
There was no nitro coffee in Pakistan either and cafes abroad always looked fun and comfortable with people blissfully immersed in the ultimate casual experience. After all, a cafe is where Monica and Rachel from F.R.I.E.N.D.S reconciled and went from being casual friends to roommates to BFFs to sister-in-laws...and back to BFFs and finally family (gotta love F.R.I.E.N.D.S). Such is the power of a good coffee place. Except, I didn’t want to be Gunther, I wanted my place will be cooler than Central Perk.
Today as I sit on Table #1, which we lovingly call “Thailand”, living my caffeine-fueled dream as a reality, with the love and support of my family and friends, and the chattering chimes of my wonderfully interactive and consistent customers that are music to my ears; I can finally say I created a community built on coffee and love.
You see, whether it’s 1 AM in the morning for late night board games or 7 AM for some sweet and savory breakfast, FLOC is always a stream through which the city life in Karachi flows. And at 1 AM in the morning my place is cooler than Gunther’s; because it’s open. You’re welcome Karachi!
